Shirley Faye Hanna
Cookeville, TN
Family graveside service for Shirley Faye Hanna, age 84, of Cookeville, TN, will be held Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery at 11am with Bro. Tim Frank officiating. Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.
Ms. Hanna passed away Monday, May 11, 2020 at Heritage Pointe Assisted Living after an extended illness. She was born Shirley Faye Cravens to the late Boyd and Sadie Cravens in Jamestown, TN.
Ms. Hanna graduated from York High School and from Tennessee Technological University with a degree in Education. She was a kindergarten teacher at Jere Whitson Elementary School for 26 years. She loved the hundreds of children that began their education in her classroom over those years.
Shirley, or “Mema” as she was lovingly known by her grandchildren, was a loving, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed working tirelessly in her yard and growing beautiful flowers. She was an awesome cook, and shared her delicious food with her family and friends. Shirley loved reading and would collect children’s books to donate to local schools.
Shirley accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior on Easter Sunday Morning in 1998 at Stevens Street Baptist Church (SSBC), where she was baptized and became a member. She worked for many years with the sweet and caring ladies sorting donated clothing on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the SSBC Care Center. These ladies and the time she spent serving there were so special to her. She was an active member of Joyce Gentry’s Ladies Friendship Sunday School Class family and friends with Mary Tollett’s Class. She served in numerous annual mission trips to Montana, participated in Keenagers, and was a greeter at SSBC.
She is survived by her three children: Kyle (Kim) Hanna of Cookeville, TN, Michael (Kim) Hanna of Cookeville, TN, and Kathy Hanna of Cincinnati, OH. Her grandchildren include Kourtney Hanna Smith (Dustin) and great-grandson, Caleb Smith of LaVergne, TN; Kandace Hanna Matheney (Justin) and great-granddaughter, Maci Rae Matheney of Cookeville, TN; Emily Hanna (Alex Ristau) of St. Louis, MO and Scott Hanna (Elizabeth Grim) of Knoxville, TN. Other family members include sister-in-laws: Yvonne Meadows, Bonnie Hanna, Ruth Cravens, and Connie Cravens, as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Harris and Larry Cravens.
A special thanks to those who helped care for her in the last years: Melissa Holder, Yvette Intermill, Miranda Cook, Kris Diaz, and several others. The hours spent with her caregivers brought her joy and the family great peace.
Mom/“Mema”, we look forward to the day we will see you again and worship Jesus together for eternity.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to “The Wow Bus”, checks should be made payable to Putnam County Board of Education with “The Wow Bus” written on the memo line, 1400 East Spring Street, Cookeville, TN 38501 or to the Care Center at Stevens Street Baptist Church, 327 West Stevens Street, Cookeville, TN 38501.

Kyle, Mike, and Kathy I am truly saddened to learn of your mother’s passing. My heart breaks for the anguish and grief you are experiencing during this time. Your mom was a remarkable loving woman in too many ways to list. The memories of all of us getting together at your house and ours are very happy ones. Weekends our moms cooked countless delicious meals our families enjoyed together. While they were in class during the summers we spent the days playing any and everything we could think of, sometimes quite competitive. I’m sure Kathy would agree that she and I were better at basketball than Mike and Daryl;) We had endless fun throughout the years growing up. Let your hearts be comforted in knowing that your mom did not pass away, she passes on. She is now with Jesus and someday you will all reunite for eternity. I am praying for God to help ease your pain. 🙏✝️
