Mildred Arlene Powers, age 97, was born Tuesday, May 29, 1923, in Putnam County, Tennessee the daughter of James Russell (Russ) and Margaret Ann (Maggie or Ma'am) Shipley Sliger. Arlene passed at Signature Healthcare on Sunday, October 4, 2020.

Arlene was raised in a large extended loving family along with 4 brothers and 6 sisters, all of whom predeceased her.

Arlene married the love of her life H.D. (Tootie) Powers in October 1942. They were married 34 years until his passing at Easter 1976, and together raised one son, Michael David Powers, who passed at Easter 2013.

She will be fondly remembered as Granny and GG to family and friends.

Arlene became a Christian early in life and was a member of the Cookeville First Baptist Church for over 65 years.

Arlene was smart, energetic and well informed on current events and politics. She enjoyed participating in a good political debate and never missed an opportunity to vote.

She loved homemaking and was an excellent housekeeper preparing countless meals served using her "good dishes" and white linen tablecloths for family and friends to enjoy. Arlene was very talented at table arrangements, place settings and floral arranging especially with fresh-cut flowers of lilac, roses, hydrangeas and other seasonal flowers she grew in her yard. She enjoyed reading novels and was a speed reader, skillful seamstress and most of all, she loved to visit with family and friends.

During Arlene's later years, she never lost her sense of humor and would enlighten most anyone with her funny quips, old time sayings and memories of days past.

Arlene is survived by daughter-in-law and caregiver, Martha Harley Powers, grandson, David Curt Powers and wife, Misty Gibson Powers, granddaughter, Mary Natalie Powers Hester and the two joys of her life, great-grandchildren, Leslie Makayla Hester and Samuel David Powers, along with one sister in law, Ruby Dell (Jim) Sliger.

In addition to her husband and son, Arlene was predeceased by brothers Fred, Frank, Rich, and Jim Sliger and sisters, Gladys Buckner, Grace Sliger, Gradie Jackson, Gertrude Murphy, Lois Dietz and Helen Danner.

A graveside service will be planned at a later date. Interment will be in Cookeville City Cemetery. The family would like to thank a special caregiver, Angie Johnson and the staff at Signature Healthcare for their friendship and loving care.
